Trekking in Thailand – What to Take, What to Wear Dec 13

You may trek wearing flip-flops with a t-shirt, but wearing them may not protect you from the branches in the jungle or from sun or protect your feet from getting hurt and sore. You have to follow some tips to trek safely in Thailand.

Footwear is very important for the trekkers. Get footwear which is strong. The terrain in Thailand will be wet and muddy. That is why the feet have to be protected. You can go with sturdy sandals, but see that the grip is good. While trekking in a jungle, you may land on the sharp objects. So, it is better to wear strong footwear. The climate is hot, humidity is unbearable and the weather is sticky. So, take a shower after trekking and change your clothes. Take clothes which are cotton and loose.

Thailand

Binoculars are the must when trekking across Thailand. In case you forget to carry a pair, there is nothing to worry because you can get them in Phuket, Bangkok or Patong for reasonable rates before you start out. You can have a look at the Elephant Hills. The mountains are full of wildlife, hornbills and monkeys.

Carry a mosquito spray to protect yourself from mosquitoes. These mosquitoes do not cause malaria, but they can be irritating and cause you discomfort in the night. If you have scratched yourself after a mosquito bite and it is not healing, then do not stay in the humid climate.

Torch is also important to carry especially when you are out in the wilderness. The nights are darkest in Khao Sok. So, torch will definitely come handy when you are out trekking and camping.

Medication is also important because you will have no access to a drugstore when you are in the wilderness. Carry all the necessary pills for headache, indigestion, and cough. Also, make sure that you are carrying some antiseptic ointment, bandages and band aids. Do not forget to carry a pocketknife. You never know when you may need it!

Make sure you carry all the above mentioned things when you are out trekking in Thailand. This will ensure that your trek goes of smoothly without any problems.

Why Many Thai-Farang Relationships Fail Dec 11

Thailand is a magical place for both tourists, expats and retirees. I have yet to meet someone who have been to Thailand, who didn’t like it there. In fact, most people I know would like to go back again as soon as possible. A lot of guys from America, UK or elsewhere work in Thailand or have retired in Thailand. Naturally, most of them are or have been in a relationship with a Thai girl. Many have had bad experiences. In most cases this could have been avoided with knowing a little more about Thai culture and society before entering into a serious relationship.

I am not talking about the stuff you can read in travel books like no kissing in public, but about what expectations Thais have to foreigners and how they view interracial relationships.

Thailand

First of all, there’s no point in generalizing, Thai women are not the same as isn’t foreign men in Thailand. Yet, most foreign men seem to end up with uneducated Thai women from the particular province of Isaan. This isn’t wrong in any way of course, but I think many foreigners do not really understand how very different life in rural Thailand is compared to their cushy, welfare states.

Village life does entail waking up at dawn and then working in the field for 12 hours straight simply to put food on the table. If you don’t work in farming, then most will work in menial labor intensive jobs for low pay. Those who get an education will still face an invisible wall in climbing the social ladder. Thailand is in many ways a feudal society and social mobility is low to nonexistent.

So, if you meet a girl from this situation, try to keep in mind that where you have a lot of choice and likely grew up knowing that there was many options available to you, then a poor Thai girl do not have these options. Her chance of social mobility are quite limited and for many, being married to a foreigner means a much higher standard of living, not only for her but for her family. Speaking of families, the pressure from parents can be quite strong when they find out that she is dating a perceived rich foreigner.

So ask yourself: Am I ready to support my girlfriend/wife?

I believe many guys would be much happier if they tried meeting women from the middle class instead who are not looking for security but rather for experiences and freedom.

Enjoy Vacation – Visiting Thailand Tourist Places Dec 09

Thailand, nestled in the heartland of Southeast Asia, is among the few countries where the ancient coexists with the modern in peaceful harmony. It’s a country that caters to vastly diverse sets of tourists, leaving each one with equally unforgettable memories. For the avid shopper, there are the bright shopping malls of Bangkok, for the intrepid trekker there are the mountain ranges of Mae Hong Son and for the lazy sun-soakers there are the pristine beaches of Phuket and Samui.

The Cities

The Thai capital, the starting point for a large number of tourists in Thailand, offers several fascinating destinations for wide-eyed tourists. Among any ‘must visit’ list for tourists in Bangkok, will be ‘The Grand Palace’. The palace was home to the many Kings of Siam and for many years, it also doubled as the nerve centre of Thai administration. In the complex of buildings you will find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaew. Considered to be among the most sacred temples of Thailand, it houses the central and most revered object of Thai culture- the Emerald Buddha.

Thailand

Another city of great cultural significance is Chiang Mai, capital of the Chiang Mai province. The city is lined by many ancient and awe-inspiring Buddhist temples. A temple on top of Doi Suthep, a hill on the north-western part of the city, offers tourists a breathtaking view over the city on a clear day.

Tourists looking for remains of old Thailand will be delighted to visit Chiang Rai, where the ‘Golden triangle’, the triangle made by the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand, is found. Yet unspoiled by the glut of tourists visiting Thailand, a quiet boat ride on the Mae Khong River might let you discover something new and extraordinary, each time.

The Islands

Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, one of the most frequented places by tourists, may have lost some of its exotic charm by the steady influx of tourists; but to the willing traveler, the destination still offers many delightful sights. Its vast span of white beaches boasts many premier, international beach resorts. And to no ones surprise, the beaches also offer its tourists several sun and surf activities. Other than the beaches, a tourist will find several visual delights such as the one-of-a-kind landscapes of Phang Nga Bay.

Koh Samui is another island with popularity comparable with Phuket. It was only in the late 1970′s that the first tourists arrived on Koh Samui. But even today, Koh Samui has retained its charm and offers its tourists white pearlescent beaches, coral reefs, exotic lagoons, picturesque water falls and a lot more.

The destinations may be many, but what a tourist in Thailand will take home is a piece of eternity, a memory of amazing, amazing Thailand.

Music in Thailand Dec 05

Thailand has a rich culture that goes back many centuries. It can trace its origins to India; the eminent French scholar Georges Coedes included Thailand among the Indianized states of southeast Asia. However, the cultural influences, although emanating from the Subcontinent, entered the country via Burma, the Khmer Empire, and the southern kingdom of Srivijaya.

The Thais are proud of their cultural achievements, and with reason. But to appreciate Thai culture properly some background knowledge is helpful. The bookshop at Silpakorn Fine Arts University has an excellent range of literature on this subject, and if you would like to engage a guide or go on a guided tour the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) can help. The following lines offer a brief introduction.

Thailand

There are two important influences on Thai culture. One is Buddhism. The other is the Ramayana, the Hindu epic poem written in Sanskrit between 500 and 100 BCE by the sage Valmiki. The epic eventually spread to Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, and King Rama I wrote a version entitled the Ramakien. Themes from the epic are present in Thai murals and Thai classical dance.

Thai Dance Thai classical dance (lakhon) was originally performed only at the royal court, but it can now be seen in theaters (notably the National Theater) and is often performed at wedding parties and other celebrations as well as in tourist restaurants.

The whole of the Ramakien would take days to perform, and a performance normally consists of just one episode. A chorus and narrators recite the narrative with musical accompaniment. The dancers tell the story through the use of stylized gestures and postures, and their movements are very slow. They hold their bodies straight from the neck to the hips and move them up and down with knees bent stretching to the rhythm of the music. Their brocaded costumes resemble the dress worn by royalty and mythological figures in old mural paintings. Masks are worn where a character is a demon or monkey.

Classical Music

Thai classical music uses a tonal system different from Western music, but those who are acquainted with Indonesian gamelan music will find many similarities. Unlike Western music which has full tones and semitones in the octave, Thai music has an eight-note octave consisting of full tones.

Among the instruments used are: The ranad or Thai xylophone is usually slightly curved and resembles a boat.

Drums (glong) come in a variety of shapes and sizes; the shallow drum is known as the ram mana.

The kawng is a gong; one common variation is the kawng wong yai, which is a series of gongs (kong) suspended on a circular frame.

The saw is a stringed instrument that is played with a bow. Its body is made from half a coconut shell.

The ching are cymbals.

The bamboo pipe (pee) is a type of oboe.

The orchestra that accompanies Thai classical dance performances-known as a pipat orchestra-usually includes a ranad, pee, ching, kawng wong yai, and a glong.

Classical Dance Form Of Thailand Dec 04

Thai people are extremely graceful in their movements and as a result their dances display elegance and fine movements. Traditional classical dancing is mixed with western culture nowadays but the old traditional elegance is still evident in Thai dances.

Thai classical dancing was a symbol which linked earth and god. It is said that they first acquired a dancing group in 1431. Later this dance form underwent a sea of changes and eventually formed a different dance style emerged with typical costumes and masks.

Thailand

There are folk dances as well as regional dances. The two well known Thai classical dance forms are khon and lakon nai. In the beginning, these forms of dances were enacted specially for entertainment of the court and not for the common people. Later on a dance theater, Likay, another form of dance for the common people was developed which became extremely popular.

Khon and lakon nai are very stylist and strictly in the classical form. Where as the Likay dance form is not as elegant but depends on the common taste of the people and it is performed to humor them in a crude way.

Khon is a masked performance depicting the Thai version of the tales of Indian Ramayana, and lakon nai narrates different legendary stories. Earlier, khon dance was only performed by men and lakon nai was performed by women because of the vital distinction between the two styles. One form needed strength and quick movement and the other form required grace and restricted movement. Though, this rule is not maintained strictly in modern times.
